Validate your XML sitemap

A sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to crawl and index. Enter your domain and we look for it in robots.txt, /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml, or enter the sitemap URL directly. We parse the XML, count entries and lastmod dates, check that every URL is on your domain and uses the right protocol, and request the first 25 URLs to make sure they return 200.

For a sitemap index, each child sitemap is listed so you can check them one by one. Large sites should split sitemaps by section, which also makes indexing problems easier to find in Search Console.

Found redirects in your sitemap? Trace them with the redirect checker, and confirm crawlers can reach the pages with the robots.txt checker.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Where is my sitemap?

Usually at /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml, and it should be listed in robots.txt with a Sitemap: line. Enter just your domain and we look in all three places.

What makes a sitemap valid?

Well-formed XML with a <urlset> or <sitemapindex> root, absolute URLs on the same domain, no more than 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed per file, and only canonical, indexable pages that return 200.

Why do redirected URLs in a sitemap matter?

A sitemap tells search engines "these are my important pages". Listing URLs that redirect or return 404 wastes crawl budget and sends mixed signals. List the final URLs only.

Do I need lastmod dates?

They are optional, but Google uses an accurate <lastmod> to decide what to recrawl first. Only update it when the page content really changes.
