Free llms.txt generator

We read your homepage and sitemap and draft an llms.txt file that helps ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity understand your site. Edit, copy, done.

Free to use, no signup needed.

Create an llms.txt file in under a minute

Enter your homepage. The generator takes your site name and description from the page head, collects the pages linked from your navigation with their link text, and adds other pages from your sitemap under an Optional section, skipping login, cart and account pages and anything your robots.txt blocks.

The result follows the llms.txt format: an H1 with the site name, a one-line summary in a blockquote, then Markdown lists of links grouped under H2 headings. Edit it in the box, download it, and upload it to the root of your site.

llms.txt only helps if AI crawlers are allowed in and can read your content without JavaScript. Check both with the AI visibility checker and the robots.txt checker.

llms.txt example

A small business site needs only a few lines. This is the shape the generator produces, filled in for an example bakery:

# Rye & Crumb Bakery

> Independent sourdough bakery in Leeds. We bake daily, deliver across West Yorkshire and run weekend bread-making classes.

Orders placed before 2pm are delivered the next day. All loaves are vegan unless marked.

## Shop
- [Bread](https://ryeandcrumb.example/bread): daily loaves, prices and allergens
- [Delivery](https://ryeandcrumb.example/delivery): areas, times and fees

## Classes
- [Bread-making classes](https://ryeandcrumb.example/classes): dates, levels and booking

## Optional
- [Our story](https://ryeandcrumb.example/about)

The llms.txt format, line by line

The format is plain Markdown, proposed at llmstxt.org. Only the first line is required, but each part has a job:

  • H1 (# Name): the name of the site or business. Required.
  • Blockquote (> …): one or two sentences saying what you do and for whom. This is the line an AI assistant is most likely to reuse.
  • Optional paragraphs: short facts that help, such as where you deliver or who the product is for. No marketing slogans.
  • H2 sections (## Docs, ## Products): Markdown lists of links, each written as - [Title](url): what the page covers.
  • ## Optional: pages an assistant can skip when it is short on space.

llms.txt vs robots.txt vs XML sitemap

They answer different questions. robots.txt says which crawlers may fetch which URLs. An XML sitemap lists every URL you want search engines to find. llms.txt is a short, human-written guide for language models: what the site is and which handful of pages explain it best. Keep all three: llms.txt does not replace either of the others, and it does nothing if robots.txt blocks AI crawlers such as GPTBot.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that gives AI assistants a short summary of your site and links to your most useful pages. It works like a curated sitemap written for language models.

Do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read llms.txt?

Support is still emerging and no AI company has committed to using it for ranking. It costs a few minutes, does no harm, and some AI tools and coding assistants already read it. Treat it as a cheap extra, not a replacement for crawlable pages.

Where do I put the file?

Save it as plain text named llms.txt in the root of your site so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, upload it to the folder that holds wp-config.php, or use an SEO plugin that supports it.

Is llms.txt a ranking factor?

No. Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search, and no AI assistant has published it as a ranking signal. It is a cheap way to describe your site clearly to tools that do read it. Crawlable pages, clear content and structured data matter far more.

Do I need a WordPress plugin for llms.txt?

No. Generate the file here, download it and upload it to the root folder of your site with your host's file manager or SFTP. Some SEO plugins can also create it; if yours does, use only one so they don't conflict.

How do I edit the draft?

Keep the H1 with your site name and the one-line summary in the blockquote. Rewrite link titles in plain words, add a short description after each link (- [Pricing](url): plans and prices), and remove pages that don't help someone understand your business.
