Most "best SEO audit tool" lists are written for agencies with five-figure budgets. If you run one site, or a handful for clients, you need something else: a tool that finds the problems that actually cost you traffic, explains them in plain words, and doesn't charge you $139 a month to do it.
This guide compares seven SEO audit tools for small sites, free and paid. One of them is ours, RareMatter, and we say so where it appears. We've tried to be fair about where each tool is the better choice.
What a good SEO audit tool should do
Before the list, here is what to judge them on. A useful audit for a small site does four things:
- Finds indexing problems. Pages Google can't crawl, pages marked
noindexby mistake, broken canonicals, redirect chains and 404s with backlinks. - Uses real search data. A crawler sees your HTML. Only Google Search Console knows which pages are indexed and which queries bring clicks.
- Ranks the fixes. Eighty-seven warnings are useless. You need the five that matter, in order.
- Helps you fix and check. The audit is only worth something if the fix goes live and you can see whether it helped.
No single free tool does all four, which is why most small sites combine two.
1. Google Search Console (free)
Best for: everyone. Start here.
Search Console is Google's own report on your site: which pages are indexed and why others aren't, which queries bring impressions and clicks, Core Web Vitals, manual actions and links. No third-party tool can see this data unless you connect it.
Limits: it doesn't crawl your HTML for on-page problems, it doesn't rank what to fix first, and its reports take practice to read. Our Search Console SEO audit guide walks through it in eight steps.
2. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free)
Best for: a free, deeper site crawl once you've verified your site.
Ahrefs offers its site audit and backlink data free for sites you own and verify. It crawls your pages, flags technical issues and shows the links pointing at you, using Ahrefs' own index.
Limits: you need to verify ownership, it uses Ahrefs' estimates rather than your Search Console clicks for traffic, and the interface is built for SEO professionals. The jump from the free tool to a paid Ahrefs plan is large.
3. Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free up to 500 URLs)
Best for: technical users who want a full crawl on their own computer.
Screaming Frog is a desktop crawler and the industry standard for technical audits. The free version crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers most small sites, and shows titles, descriptions, status codes, canonicals, redirects and more in a spreadsheet-style view.
Limits: it's a raw data tool. It tells you what it found, not what to do first. The paid licence unlocks larger crawls and integrations.
4. Semrush Site Audit (paid, from about $139 a month)
Best for: marketers who also need keyword research and competitor data.
Semrush's site audit is thorough and well presented, with a health score, issue groups and recrawls. It sits inside a full marketing suite: keyword research, rank tracking, competitor analysis, content tools.
Limits: price. At around $139 a month for its SEO plan, it is built for marketing teams. If all you need is an audit for one site, you'll pay for a lot you won't use.
5. SE Ranking (paid, from about $129 a month)
Best for: small agencies that want audits, rank tracking and client reports in one place.
SE Ranking covers site audits, rank tracking, backlinks and white-label reports at a lower price than the biggest suites.
Limits: still priced for teams and agencies rather than single site owners, and like the other suites it relies on its own estimates for traffic and keywords.
6. SEOJuice (paid, about $59 per site a month)
Best for: owners who want fixes applied automatically.
SEOJuice audits your site and can apply changes for you: meta tags, structured data and internal links, with an approval step and revert. It also monitors whether AI assistants cite you.
Limits: the price is per site, so it adds up quickly if you run several. Automatic changes suit some owners and worry others; check what it will change before you switch it on.
7. RareMatter (free plan; paid from $15 a month)
This is our product.
Best for: WordPress and small-site owners who want the audit, the fix and the proof in one loop.
RareMatter crawls your site, connects to your Search Console, and uses an AI SEO expert to rank fixes by the clicks they can win. It drafts each fix (titles, meta descriptions, canonicals and headings). When you approve one, the free WordPress plugin publishes it in Yoast, Rank Math or SEOPress, with one-click undo. Twenty-eight days later it compares your clicks before and after, so you see what each fix earned.
Limits: RareMatter doesn't do keyword research or competitor analysis, so pair it with a research tool if you need those. One-click publishing is WordPress only; on other platforms you copy the fix in. The Free plan covers one site and 25 pages a scan.

Which one should you choose?
- One site, no budget: Google Search Console plus a page checker. Run our free SEO audit tool on your top pages, then follow the Search Console audit guide.
- Technical and hands-on: add Screaming Frog or Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for a full crawl.
- You need keyword and competitor research too: Semrush or SE Ranking, if the budget allows.
- You want fixes done and measured, not another report: SEOJuice or RareMatter. RareMatter is the cheaper of the two and shows the clicks each fix earned.
Whichever you pick, the habit matters more than the tool: audit, fix the top five issues, wait a month, measure, repeat.
